CONCEAL AND CORRECT

CONCEAL AND CORRECT

Concealer and corrector, often terms used interchangeably but they are two different techniques that use different products.

Correct

Correcting, or colour correction uses colour theory to neutralise colours and create an even canvas for your makeup.

The best way to visualise this is to use a Colour Wheel.
The colour wheel is a visual representation of the colour spectrum which allows us to see the relationship between colours. A typical colour wheel will have the primary, secondary and tertiary colours next to each other and between the primary colours needed to create them. The reason they’re so useful to us as makeup artists and makeup lovers is that this organisation makes it very simple to see which colours will be needed for a correction.

Whatever colour you need to correct, all you have to do is look for the opposite colour on the wheel and that will be the perfect neutraliser!

For example, if you need to correct a red blemish, opposite this on the wheel is green, so a green based corrector will be perfect. Similarly, if we need to correct blue shadows under the eyes, orange will be the perfect colour.

Now to put it into practice! The best way to use correcting products is under the base. The aim is to neutralise so that entire skin shares the same undertone, this way when you apply a base over the top, it will look the same everywhere it is applied.

Less is more! The amount you apply should be just enough to mute the area you’re correcting or else you might just introduce a new undertone that you’ll have to conceal later.

Pro Tip: Once you’ve applied your correcting shades, use a small amount of translucent powder to set the product so that it doesn't move when you gently stipple foundation over the top.

Products:

The Kryolan Concealer Wheel (Australia) contains an essential range of skin tone and corrective colours. These shades help counteract the most common and unwanted imperfections on the skin. The concentrated pigment in the concealer means only a small amount of product is required when wanting to achieve optimum results.

Plus, this wheel has a handy sticker on the base to remind you what each colour is suitable for! Note that these colours have been pre-mixed with a base shade to prevent the problem of over-pigmentation when correcting.

These colours also come in a handy corrector duo for personal use.

Conceal

For the other half of the equation, we have concealing. If correction is best done before a base, concealer is best applied afterwards. Concealer is best used sparingly to add extra coverage where your base and correction aren’t quite enough to cover completely. The ideal concealer should be the exact shade of your skin and blend perfectly into the surrounding skin. It should be applied directly to the area to conceal and blended gently at the edges for a seamless transition.

Pro Tip: Having said that there’s always room to bend the rules! Some people find using a slightly lighter concealer under the eyes helps brighten dark under eyes, but keep in mind this might make puffy eyes look puffier! To cover raised blemishes try using a slightly darker concealer, essentially “contouring” the blemish to make it appear to recede into the skin.
